Outstanding Faculty Recognized at Annual Event

Jacksonville State University held its annual Faculty Awards Program and Reception on Tuesday, May 12 at the Houston Cole Library.

The evening’s highest honors went to winners of the four outstanding faculty awards:

Dr. Glaucio Scremin, assistant professor in the department of health, physical education and recreation, recipient of the Earlon and Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award;

Dr. R. Lawson Veasey, professor and head of the department of political science and public administration, winner of the Cleo and Carla Thomas Award for Outstanding Community Education/ Service;

Dr. Guillermo A. Francia, III, professor of computer science and CISA director, winner of the Raymond and Ruth Ringer Faculty Development Award; and

Dr. Donald Prudlo, assistant professor of history, winner of the Faculty Scholar Lecture Award.

The Earlon and Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award, a university-sponsored, faculty administered program established in 1993, is designed to honor an outstanding faculty member for his/her efforts in teaching. The person selected for this honor receives an honorarium of $500 with a budget of $500 for expenses and a framed certificate displaying this accomplishment. Only full-time faculty members are eligible for this award.

The Cleo and Carla Thomas Community Education and Service Award, a university-sponsored, faculty-administered program established in Spring 1999, is designed to honor an outstanding faculty member for his/her achievements in the area of education or service to the civic community in the Jacksonville State University area. The person selected for this honor will receive an honorarium of $500 with a budget of $500 for expenses, and framed certificate displaying this accomplishment. Only full-time faculty members are eligible for this award.

The Faculty Scholar Lecture Award, a University-sponsored, faculty-administered program established in Spring 1998, is designed to honor an outstanding faculty member for research, publication, or other original work in his or her field. The person selected for this honor will receive an honorarium of $500 with a budget of $500 for expenses. Only full-time faculty members are eligible for this award.

The Ray and Ruth Ringer Faculty Award, a university-sponsored, faculty-administered program established in Spring 2008, is designed to honor faculty who excel in the areas of scholarship (including publications, presentations, etc.), community service from direct involvement in organizations, clubs, or charities, and exemplary classroom teaching. This award can only be received once during the faculty member's tenure at Jacksonville State University.

In addition to these awards, 38 faculty were recognized with service pins, including Dr. Peter Robinson, who has been at JSU for 45 years; and Dr. Phillip Koerper, recognized for his 40-year tenure.

Renee Baptiste; Timothy Barnett; Wendy Faughn; Pitt Harding; Dana Ingalsbe; Jane Kushma; Vance McLaughlin; Betty Morris; Laurie Phillips; Jennifer Savage; Nancy Stewart; Steven Stout; and Tommy Turner.

Also recognized were faculty receiving their doctoral degrees, including: Amy Franklin, David Thorton and Aaron Garrett, MCIS; Marjorie Wilson, Nursing; and Melinda Bolgar, HPER.

Retiring faculty who were recognized included:
